As we circled the island of Maui on a boat tour with the hopes of seeing some whales I found my self transfixed. Not on the water, where we might actually see some whales, but on the incredible formations of the island. Formations created from the two shield volcanoes 1.5 million years ago. The cascading mountain scape, layered peaks, and falling ridgelines held my attention throughout the majority of our tour. As we circled around, this one ridgeline was always present, always watchful. Looming over us as we explored the surrounding ocean. As the peak of the mountain emerged from the clouds, and we came parallel to the ridgeline I captured this image.
